God’s unconditional love frees you from viewing Him as distant, judgmental, and angry. It frees you from the shame and condemnation that Satan wants you to heap upon yourself whenever you give in to temptation. It reminds you that it’s okay to not be okay.

This may be hard to accept, especially if you have been viewing God as an angry judge looking for an excuse to throw lightning bolts down on you. You must understand, though, if you are in Christ, that image of an angry God waiting to smite you is yet another lie from Satan meant to keep you from experiencing a fulfilling relationship with the God who loves you to the point of adopting you into His family. The best way to expose and overcome this lie is to look at the truth of Scripture. What does God’s Word tell us about how He views us?

There are two sections of Scripture that have transformed my view of God and made His unconditional love come alive in my heart. The first is the story of the lost son in Luke 15, which we looked at in an earlier chapter. The message remains the same: God loves you in the same way a father loves his son. No matter how far you’ve run from him, He will always be waiting for you with open arms. He won’t demand an apology or require you to make amends. He just wants to break out the barbecue and celebrate you coming home to Him.

The second passage is 1 Corinthians 13—a passage I had long been familiar with as “the love chapter” but only recently came to understand as a description of God’s love for us as well. God is love,4 which means any verse describing love is also giving us details about God himself.5 So with that in mind, take a look at this passage and notice how it describes His love for you:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).
